No problem, Noel. :D I have been hangin' dipoles for over 40 years. The antenna by Phil is not a bad compromise and will net you contacts, but it is not an efficient antenna. Your vertical would be more efficient !! You simply can't change the laws of physics and there ain't no free lunch ! For 80M you should have around 132 feet of wire. To shorten it by using loading coils or such WILL physically shorten the antenna, but it will also reduce your signal ! The degree to which your signal will be reduced is converted to heat.

We can go into what might be best for your particular setup.

Noel,

I thought i sent the website for folded dipoles. I quess it did not post. So here we go again!
Website is http://www.packetradio.com/t2fd.htm . I figured the costs if I built the ant myself and it came out to be about
half price of buying theirs.

Noel:

Here's an idea about a low band antenna - the inverted-L. You already have a vertical antenna supported about 8 feet up, right ? Here ya go - http://rsars.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/40m-short-80m-wire-antenna-g8ode-iss-1-31.pdf . The loading coil is just a way of shortening the antenna to the available distance.

Hi everyone.. Noel kj4unx and I will be on tonight (Mon. Sept 2) at 8pm on 40m. We are going to start at 7.228 Mhz and see if we can establish a rag chew freq. Some of our club members do not have 80 meters yet. We will be on at 8pm and everyone is welcome. Time to get something started. We will be on the repeater as well. Noel and I will be trying to get his digital station set up. So any help will be appreciated. Come have some fun and lets see what happens.
